An Independence Day Reflection from Harvard Alumni for Free Speech

As we celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, we are reminded that America's experiment in self-government has always depended upon the free exchange of ideas. The liberties secured at great cost in 1776, including the freedom to think, question, and speak openly, remain the foundation of both our republic and our institutions of higher education.

Over the past two years, Harvard has taken important steps toward strengthening academic freedom and open inquiry. While there is still work to be done, we should all be encouraged that these principles are once again at the center of the conversation while retaining our commitment to ensure that Harvard continues to build on this foundation.

At Harvard Alumni for Free Speech, we believe a great university must be a place where ideas are tested through reasoned debate, not silenced through fear or conformity. That commitment is essential not only to academic excellence, but to the health of a free society.

As Americans commemorate 250 years of independence, we are reminded that the liberties secured by the Founders have always depended upon citizens willing to exercise them responsibly. Universities have a unique obligation in that endeavor. They prepare the next generation not merely for careers, but for citizenship.

Thank you for standing with us as we work to preserve these values at Harvard. We wish you and your family a joyful and meaningful Independence Day.
